This is probably the best known and most widely used method of non-destructive testing. Developed over the course of many years, radiographic inspection (X-Ray) provides a reliable method of detecting flaws in a wide range of product types including welds, castings, welded structures and composites.
It is employed predominantly in the fabricating and casting industries for quality control, and will reveal sub-surface defects such as porosity, inclusions and cracks.
Radiography is a very adaptable method of testing and can be used both in our laboratory facilities and on-site. In our laboratory facilities we have an exposure bays with x-ray and gamma capabilities.
Radiographic Testing is a way of examining materials for defects. This method uses short wavelength electromagnetic radiation to go through various materials. Radiographic Testing uses penetrating radiation and works on the principle that thicker materials will absorb more of. The specimen is placed between a source of radiation and a sheet of radiographic film. An existing defect anywhere within the specimen will absorb less radiation than the specimen itself. The defects presence and location will be indicated on the film by an area of higher or darker exposure.
There are safety hazards inherited in Radiographic Testing which dictate a special procedure. One of the significant benefits of Radiographic Testing is its ability to detect internal non-linear flaws. By looking at the film, our Radiographic specialist will identify slight differences in the density to enable them to accurately locate a defect, identify its type, size and location. The accuracy in the film can potentially reduce the need for expensive and unnecessary repairs as most construction standards allow for some level of defect, depending on size and type.
